Valentine’s Day Crochet Sock Monkey Hat – Free Crochet Pattern

My newest free crochet pattern may be my favorite! As many of you know I love all things heart related, I also love all things sock monkey. I love valentine’s day, I love raising awareness for Congenital Heart Defects (CHD’s), – plus, I love pink! I created this pattern for my three year old, she loves fun hats & this one has been a huge hit! I know your little’s will love it as much as my daughter does!

Crochet Materials:

  • Red Heart – Baby Rose
  • Red Heart – White
  • Red Heart – Perfect Pink
  • Stitch Markers/ Safety Pins
  •  Yarn Needle
  • 2 wood buttons

Stitches & Abbreviations:

  • DC – Double Crochet
  • HDC – Half Double Crochet
  • DC2tog
  • SlSt – Slip Stitch
  • Ch – Chain

Hat:

  • Using white yarnCh 4, SlSt to join
  • Row 1: Ch 3, 1 DC in ring
  • Row 2 -5: Ch 3,  *2DC in next stitch*, SlSt to join at end
  • Row 6-12: Using baby pink Ch 3, *2DC in next stitch, 1DC in next stitch*, SlSt to join top of Ch 3
  • *DO NOT TIE OFF END*

 

Ear Flaps:

  • Count 10 from crochet hook and place stitch marker – count 11 from stitch marker and place stitch marker – count 10 from marker and place a stitch marker (the 2 10 spaces will be the ear flaps) 

  • Row 1: Ch 3, DC next 10 stitches (to marker)
  • Row 2: Ch 3 & turn, DC2tog, DC next 6 stitches, DC2tog
  • Row 3: Ch 3 & turn, DC2tog, DC next 4 stitches, DC2tog

  • Row 4: Ch 3 & turn,  DC2tog, DC next 2 stitches, DC2tog
  • Row 5: Ch 3 & turn, DC2tog, DC2tog
  • *Cut and tie off – leave string* 

Join baby pink yarn to next stitch marker

  • Row 1: Ch 3, DC next 10 stitches (to marker)
  • Row 2: Ch 3 & turn, DC2tog, DC next 8 stitches, DC2tog
  • Row 3: Ch 3 & turn, DC2tog, DC next 6 stitches, DC2tog
  • Row 4: Ch 3 & turn,  DC2tog, DC next 4 stitches, DC2tog
  • Row 5: Ch 3 & Turn, DC2tog, DC next 2 stitches, DC 2 tog
  • Row 6: Ch 3 & turn, DC2tog, DC2tog
  • *Cut and tie off – leave string* 

Sock Monkey Mouth

  • Using white yarn
  • Ch 10
  • HDC in second chain from hook, HDC next 8 stitches, 4HDC next stitch

  • *Continuing around* HDC next 8 stitches, 3 HDC in last stitch – SlSt to join 
  • *Continue working in same direction* Ch 1, HDC next 10 stitches, 2 HDC in each of next 3 stitches,  HDC next 10 stitches, 2 HDC in each of next 3 stitches
  • Cut & tie off & weave in ends

  • *Using Perfect Pink Yarn & Yarn Needle*
  • Attache Perfect Pink Yarn to second row of stitches and stitch across mouth skipping every second stitch as shown in photo

Sock Monkey Eyes:

  • *Using white yarn* 
  • Ch 4 & make ring
  • 8 DC in ring – cut & tie (weave in ends)
  • Attach button to crochet circle using yarn needle

  • Ch 3 & make ring
  • Ch 2 (in ring)
  • TC (in ring)
  • TC (in ring)
  • DC (in ring)
  • DC (in ring)

  • Ch 3 (in ring) *this makes the point of the heart* 
  • DC (in ring)
  • DC (in ring)
  • DC (in ring)
  • TC (in ring)
  • TC (in ring)
  • Ch 1, join with SlSt to beginning Ch 2

Monkey Ears

Sock Monkey Ear

  • Ch 3 and make ring
  • Ch 2, 9 DC in ring
  • Ch 2 & turn, 2 DC in each stitch

  • Join white yarn
  • Ch 1, HDC in each stitch around (this will cause the ear to curl in)

 

Pom Pom

  • I use a business card to make my pom poms – you can use a pom pom maker or any 2 inch piece of card board also (= 

  • Using all 3 yarn colors wrap around business cards 70 times – tie off in center of loop, then cut and shape pom pom

Layout

Use safety pins or stitch markers to lay out monkey as shown below

Using baby pink yarn attach all appliques to hat body

 

Braids

  • Cut 20 48′ strips of each color yarn (White, Baby Pink & Perfect Pink)
  • Separate 10 strands of each color into 2 groups (one for each ear flap)
  • Fold 48′ strips in half a knot through tip of monkey ear flap
  • separate yarn into 3 sections, each with 20 strands each and braid
